Off-Grid Solar Power Plant

It’s possible to install a solar system that is independent of the electrical grid. This is called an off-grid system. Off-grid systems are able to produce enough electricity to cover 100% or less than that of the energy needs for the building. Most homes/shops have higher electricity demand in the evening or at night, so an off-grid system usually incorporates a battery bank which can store extra energy produced during the day. Off-grid systems are more flexible and easily expandable as the demand raises. By installing an off-grid power plant we can ensure uninterrupted power supply because of the backup power batteries, unlike on-grid solar power plants. Off-grid systems are most common all over India particularly in Kerala. Off-grid solar power plants can operate independently from the local grid supply to provide electricity to your home/ industry. In the event of outage the power conditioning system will automatically switchover to backup power stored in the battery bank. Grid-tied / On- Grid Solar Power Plants

Grid-tied systems are the most common type of solar PV system in most of the developed countries. Grid-tied systems are connected to the electrical grid with the flexibility to use solar energy as well as electricity from the grid. Grid-tied systems do not need to produce 100% of the electricity demand for a home or business from solar. When there is no demand for energy, the solar power conditioning unit supplies excess electricity into the main grid.  When the solar panels are not producing enough energy (at night or on a cloudy day), electricity from the grid supplements or replaces electricity from the solar. Owners of a grid-tied system complete a net metering agreement with their grid power supply provider. This agreement allows utility customers to receive credit for the excess energy they generated and supplied to the grid, typically credited as a kilowatt-hour credit on the next month’s bill. Net metering policies and agreements are different for each state. Going with a grid-tied solar PV system is no different than continuing with grid power, except that some or the entire electricity you use comes from the sun. Grid-tied systems do not provide protection from power outages. When the electrical grid fails, grid-tied systems will not continue to operate. An on-grid system usually comes without battery back-up.

For example, assuming a house is consuming 20 units a day. Monthly consumption is about 6oo units. If one installs a 3KW on-grid solar power plant it will generate 12 to 15 units a day. During day time if solar energy is available, electricity generated from the solar panel runs the load in the house. If sufficient power is not available due to highly overcast weather or during maintenance then power may be drawn from GRID In the event a user is not running any equipment or uses very little power from the solar panels, rest of the generated electricity will be fed to the grid if you preferred so at an attractive buy back price per unit as per norms* of grid power supply provider. In this scenario the user will be ending up paying only for the remaining 5*30 units (150units) of surplus electricity used from the GRID which can further be minimized by adding few extra panels and perceiving few energy saving practices at home.

Hybrid Solar Power Plant

Hybrid solar power plants are the best which is a combination package of on-tied and off-grid solar power plants. These systems can either be described as off-grid solar with utility backup power, or on-grid system with extra battery bank. The backup battery is charged by both the grid as well as solar panels. In the event of outage the power conditioning system will automatically switchover to backup power stored in the battery bank.
